Veneers Q & A
What are porcelain veneers?

Veneers are thin pieces of porcelain that fit over the front of existing teeth, correcting discolorations, chips, small teeth, cracks, gaps and crooked teeth. Veneers differ from crowns in that they are placed on the portion of the tooth that's exposed with a person smiles. Much of the natural tooth is preserved when veneers are placed.

Are there risks associated with porcelain veneers?

When enamel is removed from the surface of a tooth, temporary sensitivity sometimes occurs. The sensitivity usually only lasts for a few weeks following treatment. It should resolve itself without further invention from the dentist.

While porcelain veneers won't stain due to tobacco, coffee or tea, they can chip or crack, especially if patients bite their nails or chew on hard substances like candy or ice. Patients who grind their teeth during sleep may be provided with an "occlusal” or bite guard to protect their veneers at night.

What about the bottom teeth?

Patients who get porcelain veneers on their top teeth usually opt to whiten their bottom teeth so the colors are similar.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Veneers usually last about a decade before they need to be replaced. However, cracks or chips may require replacement sooner. In some cases, porcelain veneers will never need replacement.

Can veneers be removed?

Since approximately 0.5 mm of tooth enamel must be removed so the veneer can be placed on the natural tooth, the treatment is not reversible.

Do veneers require special maintenance?

No. Veneers should be treated the same as natural teeth. Brushing with non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste and flossing regularly is all that's required to keep porcelain veneers looking great.
